ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND | Donald Trump breezed into
Scotland and announced that he was going to create “the
best golf course in the world.” Naturally there was local
skepticism and the Aberdeenshire government and noisy
neighbors have erected considerable roadblocks for the
American billionaire.
Nevertheless, Trump International Scotland is scheduled
to open in July, which is only about a year from when ground
was first broken, alarmingly ahead of a reasonable schedule.
Those who have seen it are genuinely bowled over.
Designed by Martin Hawtree, whom the R&A has com-
missioned to make some tweaks on three Open Champi-
onship venues, Trump Scotland is threaded through giant
dunes that the architect says looks more like “the west
coast of Ireland than the east coast of Scotland.”
While the vistas are dramatic, the jury has yet to be
polled on the shot values, and when that judgment comes
in, the discussions can start as to whether the course is
of major competitive caliber. Trump has already pumped
more than £50 million into the course and when all is said
and done, some say that £75 million could be spent on the
course and clubhouse alone.
