Higginbottom Routs
Field In Riversdale Cup
Australian Jake Higginbottom, the world’s
13th-ranked male amateur, routed the field in
the 117th Riversdale Cup Sunday at Riversdale
GC in Melbourne.
The 18-year-old from New South Wales
never trailed after an opening-round 64. He
followed with 68-68-69 to finish on 19-under
269 for the tournament. Queensland’s Daniel
McGraw was a distant second on 12-under 276,
including a closing 64.
Reigning Australian Stroke Play champion
Cameron Smith finished third on 10 under, while
fellow Queenslander Daniel Nisbet, winner of
the Lake Macquarie championship earlier this
year, Victoria’s Rory Bourke and South Australia’s Christopher Brown shared third at 281.
Earlier in the week at Riversdale, the Victorian pair of Bourke and Geoff Drakeford finished
with rounds of 72-68, 4-under par, to win the
Australian Men’s Foursomes Championship. They
won by three shots from Queensland’s Aaron
Wilkin and New South Wales Jarrod Freeman and
the NSW pair of Matt Stieger and Brett Drewitt.
Bourke was a late addition to the field
replacing fellow Victorian Nathan Holman,
who withdrew with shoulder soreness. Holman
returned to play in the Riversdale Cup, where
he shared ninth place.
Higginbottom and Cameron Smith finished
in fourth place at 2-over par, while Nisbet and
Victoria’s Anthony Houston finished in fifth
place at 3-over par.
