After that week, the price of Sawgrass CC
went up dramatically and Beman’s interest in the
property disappeared.
It was instead bought by ARVIDA, a development company, and it paid far more than the price
Beman was offered.

“I knew we had to make a huge investment in
infrastructure to put on the equivalent of a major
championship (at Sawgrass CC),” Beman said. “I
wasn’t going to spend that kind of money on some-
one else’s club. We had to own our own place.”
Beman, instead, bought 415 acres across U.S.
A1A for $1. He hired Pete Dye to create what
would become TPC Sawgrass. Beman said, “It
