B Tiger toasts Phil and Bubba:
1-under par, 6-over par, 8-over
par. He’s back. Again. And this
time it’s for real. Right? “That
was the old Tiger. That was
beautiful to watch. That’s what
we all come to see. That was
awesome.” The adoring words
of a spectator? Nope. It was
Masters champion Bubba run-
ning up the white flag. It’s all
over. Tiger’s gonna grind ’em to
death just like in the old days.
Amateur at The Olympic Club.
The 27-year-old finished the
day looking down on Tiger.
Expect him to be looking up to
him on Sunday.
“Give Tiger the spotlight. I
don’t care,” Thomson said. “If
I go out and putt the way I did
today, I’ll be in contention.” A
man can dream.
A boy can dream, too. Zhang
recovered from a nightmare,
dropping eight shots in his first
five holes, to finish 9-over par
with a 79. “I was shaking on the
first tee,” he said. “So I’m actu-
ally okay with what I shot today.
At least I broke 80.”
It’s comforting to know
Zhang’s math isn’t as good as
his golf. Wonder if he could add
this up: World’s top three shoot
79, 77, 73. Luke Donald 9 over,
Rory McIlroy 7 over, Lee West-
wood 3 over. Ouch. A
