Ireland’s Adrian Morrow continued his
in-form play by winning the European Seniors
Championship Saturday at GC Achensee-Pertisau in Austria.
Morrow, who won the Irish Seniors Amateur
Open at Athenry Golf Club in May, finished with
a 54-hole total of 1-under par on rounds of 70-
73-69. That was one stroke better than defending champion Tomas Persson of Sweden, who
posted three consecutive 71s. Bart Nolte of the
Netherlands finished third on 4 over.
Rocio Ruiz de Velasco from Spain won the
women’s championship with rounds of 74-73-
74. She defeated Germany’s Chris Utermarck,
who finished two-shots back after a closing 69.
In gorgeous weather, Morrow and Persson battled to the end, with the outcome not
decided until the last hole.
“Playing here is fantastic, simply a beauti-
ful place to golf,” Morrow said. “My game was
perfect this year, which is the main reason I
was able to beat Tomas and Bart who are both
really strong competitors.”
This is the first European Seniors title for the
59-year-old Irishman, who placed fourth overall
in 2010 and fifth in 2011. Persson, 63 from Stock-
holm, won the 2011 title and earned a bronze
medal in 2010. He now adds a silver medal to his
collection for his 2012 performance.
In the Men’s Super Seniors competition,
German Veit Pagel took the title on 12 over.
